Computer Class Syllabus Outline
Computer Basics:
1) Know the core parts of a computer system and at least 3 extra peripherals.
2) Know what additional devices can be added to the computer and their use.
3) Know the outline of the Windows Operating System, and the current version of Macs.
4) Know founders of modern-day computers, and basic history of computers.
Computer Hardware:
1) Know the basic hardware components that are required to make a computer work.
2) Know what additional devices can be installed in the computer and their use.
3) Know what the different ports are on the computer and what devices connect to them.
Computer Operations:
1) Know the basic sections that appear on the desktop.
2) Know what the basic categories are on the Display Properties menu and their use.
3) Know what the different parts of the Start menu are and what they are used for.
4) Know what the different kinds of software there are on a computer.
5) Know what file extensions are and the main ones on a computer.
6) Know what contents are on the control panel and the basic functions of them.
Computer Internet Basics:
1) Know what the primary types of internet functions there are.
- a) For each type, know the primary uses.
- b) For each type, know the primary components and functions.
- c) For each type, know the benefits and consequences of using it.
2) Know what the secondary kinds of internet functions are.
3) Explain what the World Wide Web is and how it is used.
4) Know the methods on how to get on the internet, and what main steps you have to go through.
Computer Troubleshooting:
1) Know what the maintenance programs are, where they are located and how to run them.
2) Know how to use the help and search functions.
3) Know what the main types of software that you would use to protect your computer.
4) Know what the main types of hardware that you would use to protect your computer.
5) Know the main kinds of ways you can be negatively impacted using the computer.
Macintosh:
1) Know what the primary differences are between using a Mac verses a PC.
2) Know how programs operate on a Mac.
3) Know how to go into the systems area and what is important there.
4) Know what the purposes of preferences are and how to use them.
5) Know what the “apple” is and how is it used.
6) Know what the purpose of “finder” is and how it is used.
7) Know how to use “force quit” and what its purpose is.
8) Know what “sherlock” is and how and why it is used.
9) Know what the components on the Mac desktop are and their uses.
10) Know what different types of maintenance and troubleshooting there are on the Mac.
